Selection & drying
Mature dense hardwood is selected log by log, then rested in open drying yards until moisture falls to carbonization range. Drying too fast splits the wood; too little drying wastes kiln days.
Our process is centuries old and deliberately slow. Each stage exists because removing it would show up in the burn.

Mature dense hardwood is selected log by log, then rested in open drying yards until moisture falls to carbonization range. Drying too fast splits the wood; too little drying wastes kiln days.
Logs are hand-stacked in traditional earthen kilns and carbonized over days on a slow temperature curve. The kiln master reads smoke color hour by hour, white to yellow to blue, to steer the burn.
For white charcoal, the burn is pushed past 1000°C and then smothered under ash and earth, hardening the carbon structure. After cooling, every piece is graded, sorted, and inspected by hand.
